ANTIQUE MID VICTORIAN 18K GOLD ENAMEL CARVED SHELL CUPID & EAGLE CAMEO BROOCH
An antique 18 carat gold (tests thereabouts, of heavy duty hollow construction) brooch / pendant, with an ornate repoussé bezel decorated with polychrome enamel highlights, surrounding a natural shell cameo hand carved to depict Cupid riding an eagle, after the original work by Christen Købke - an allegory of the power of love over one of the four elements (air).
Such a lovely carving...so collectible & extremely wearable!
CONDITION: Generally very good. Slight signs of detail wear, shallow denting & enamel loss commensurate with age and use. Faint natural stress lines to shell, of no consequence. Old solder to fittings.
DATE/MARKS: Mid 19th Century. Not marked.
DIMENSIONS: 57 x 44 mm overall (1 inch = 25.4 mm). To give an impression of scale, the coin is 19 mm or ¾ of an inch diameter.
WEIGHT: Approx. 13.5 grams.
