ANTIQUE VICTORIAN GOLD SHELL CAMEO BROOCH c1860 ANDROMACHE & HECTOR ACHILLES

695.00

A large-scale antique natural shell cameo; finely hand carved to depict Andromache, holding her baby Astyanax, attempting to restrain her husband Hector before his encounter with Achilles (after a scene from Homer's Iliad), set in a good quality solid 9 carat gold (tests thereabouts) mount, with applied highlights, for wear as a brooch.

A finely carved, highly collectable cameo depicting a very interesting subject...so wearable too!

CONDITION: All original and very, very good. Slightest signs of shell detail wear and negligible denting to mount commensurate with age and use.

DEFECTS: None.

DATE/MARKS: Around 1860/70. Not marked.

DIMENSIONS: 73 x 62 mm (1 inch = 25.4 mm). To give an impression of scale, the coin is 19 mm or ¾ of an inch diameter.

WEIGHT: Approx. 23.6 grams.
