ANTIQUE WOOD GOLD TOOTHPICK BOX c1744 w/ HARDSTONE CAMEO POET ALEXANDER POPE
An antique English hand carved wooden toothpick box; with gold fittings, sprung button and opening to reveal a red velvet interior and original mirror to the inner lid. To the outer lid is a rounded glass covering an exceptionally finely hand carved hardstone cameo depicting the poet Alexander Pope, the gold bezel reading 'Na. 22 My 1688, Ob. 30 May 1744'. Made to commemorate the death of Pope, quite possibly a presentation item.

CONDITION: Expected signs of wear commensurate with age and use. Tiny pins missing to base hinge, lid & base now separate when open. One end section missing, and some loss to wood near hinge. Interior velvet liner & mirror very worn - please examine pictures. Some light scratching to cameo glazing. Cameo appears perfect.
DATE/MARKS: Around 1744. Not marked.
DIMENSIONS: Lid approx. 3 x 1 inches, cameo approx 19 x 15 mm (1 inch = 25.4 mm). To give an impression of scale, the coin is 19 mm or ¾ of an inch diameter.
