ANTIQUE 18K GOLD MICRO MOSAIC CHERUB BULLA AEI LOCKET by VATICAN WORKSHOP c1870
A stunning quality antique Italian, solid 18 carat gold (tests thereabouts) archaeological revival 'Bulla' pendant; finely made, with wonderfully hand crafted micromosaic decoration to the front depicting a winged cherub, reading 'AEI' (Amity, Eternity, Infinity) in raised lettering to the back, and hinging open to reveal a currently empty glass locket compartment.
Wow - a very scarce, fabulously collectable item...wearable too!
CONDITION: Very good. Slight signs of wear and light tarnish commensurate with age and use. Tiny areas of tesserae loss - please examine pictures. Hinge good, closure a little stiff. Missing a lower drop.
DATE/MARKS: Around 1870. Stamped with the crossed keys of the Vatican Workshops.
DIMENSIONS: 38 x 23 mm (1 inch = 25.4 mm). To give an impression of scale, the coin is 19 mm or ¾ of an inch diameter.
WEIGHT: Approx. 11.2 grams.
