3rd Hour of the Day Cameo

A scarce antique solid 15 carat gold (tests thereabouts) brooch, holding a finely hand carved hardstone agate cameo of the Third Hour of the Day.

"Among the twelve Hours, the Third Hour of the Day is without doubt the most admired and coveted. Above her is the sign of Jupiter, both planet and supreme god of Olympus; this, and the smoking censer in her hands, are reminders that this time of day is the hour for prayer and devotional practices." Lovely quality, so collectible & very wearable!

CONDITION: Very good. Slightest signs of wear commensurate with age and use. A couple of tiny chips, negligible. Safety chain & pin clasp old additions.

DATE/MARKS: Around 1870/80. Not marked.

DIMENSIONS: 32 x 27 mm (1 inch = 25.4 mm). To give an impression of scale, the coin is 19 mm or ¾ of an inch diameter.

WEIGHT: Approx. 12.2 grams.
