ANTIQUE FRENCH 14K GOLD CANNETILLE & ENAMEL HAND PAINTED SILK HAND FAN c1820
An antique, probably French, folding hand fan; beautifully made, with stunning quality 14 carat gold (tests) cannetille guard sticks, each one topped with three finely hand painted enamel miniatures on gold, possibly depicting a fable / folktale (or similar) involving a knight, and the silk leaf itself hand painted to depict a young couple in a countryside setting, with hand carved & pierced ribs/sticks.
Wow - such a wonderful quality, extremely rare & immensely collectable item!
CONDITION: All original & very good. Faint wear commensurate with age and use. Possible adhesive repairs just visible to guard sticks. Some cracks to enamel panels and small area of loss to one. Light wear to fabric and paint loss to folds, probably an old replacement. End ring shape distorted - of no consequence.
DATE/MARKS: Early 19th Century.
DIMENSIONS: Approx. 11 ¼ inches long & 20 inches span (1 inch = 25.4 mm). To give an impression of scale, the coin is 19 mm or ¾ of an inch diameter.
WEIGHT: Approx. 126.5 grams.
